Friends and Family Support Program
Pre-surgery is definitely a time to lean on others for help. In the support program, trusted friends and family members are invited to help out - we guide them in their role.
Benefits for the person requiring surgery
Healthy lifestyle changes are difficult to make at the best of times and require a supportive environment. You are more likely to make a positive change if your partner or others around you do so too. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you, who will hold you accountable, and who will generally bring out the best in you.
Some potential benefits of having supports in the program:
-
A gentle nudge when the motivation is wavering
-
A companion for the evening walk
-
Emotional support when times are challenging
-
Assistance in the kitchen preparing healthy meals
-
A boost in morale when the need arises
-
A workout partner for the fitness program
Peer support also offers something we can’t: Comfort, from someone who knows you and can be there whenever you need them.
Benefits for friends and family
Helping others at a time of need, in a way that can change their lives forever, can provide great rewards to both you and the person you are helping. Sometimes though, people are asking for our help, and we want to help, but we just don’t know how. In those circumstances, we could use some guidance on how to most effectively lend a hand.
As we guide you in your role you will learn about:
-
The PrehabMD program and various roles you can play in helping your friend or family member prepare for surgery. You can support them directly, behind the scenes, or from a distance if you live in a different city.
-
How to communicate effectively. Sometimes others don’t want help and we may feel that, despite our best intentions, our efforts are unproductive or even backfire. There is a way to talk to someone that elicits resistance or arguments … and a way that nudges a person toward change.
-
How to motivate others. Some members may have been signed up by loved ones and may not be fully committed. Some members will initially be motivated but find their motivation fading over time.
-
Taking care of yourself. Surgery has ripple effects extending beyond the individual patient. An upcoming surgical procedure can affect the mental and physical health of family members and caregivers, who may also need support. Compassion fatigue and caregiver burnout are both reviewed.
Don’t underestimate the difference you can make just by being there for them. What you do and say matters. Plus, it just feels good to help others at a time of need and share some shoulder-to-shoulder intimacy with our friends and loved ones.
If you know someone enrolled in the PrehabMD program and want to support them, we have material specifically for you included in their membership.
